A theater revived $8,917 in ticket sales for one performance of a play.Tickets for preferred seats cost$45 each and regular seats cost $34 each . All of the theaters 75 preferred seats were sold out that evening. How many tickets were sold?

First, we know that 75 preferred seats were sold, and each of those seats cost 45 dollars.

Since 75 x 45 = 3378, we know that $3378 dollars of the total money made was of preferred seats.

If we subtract the $3378 from the total money of $8917, then we get $5542.

$5542 is the other money that was made off of the regular seats.

So now if we divide 5542 by 34 (the cost of the regular seats) we get 163!

And if we add the regular seats with the preferred seats...

163 + 75 = 238

We get a total of 238 seats sold for the play!
