____________________The Tale Of Boreas_________________________
One day, a very handsome man was walking along a dirt path. Whenever he took a step, snow came and the plants around him froze. He saw nothing wrong with this, for he was the god of winter, Boreas.
He was on his way to Mount Olympus, to see his old friends, Horae, Carpo, and Persephone. They too, were goddess of seasons. Horae was they goddess of summer. She was the most lively of the 4, and the most outgoing. Carpo was the goddess of autumn. She was very optimistic and wasn’t very smart. Last but not least was Persephone. She was the most clever and kind. She was never caught being mean.
When Boreas got to Olympus, the other 3 goddess were there.
"Sit, my good friend, we have something to tell you," said Horae, who was the leader of the group.
Boreas did what he was told, afraid to get on Horae's bad side, and waited patiently for the news.
"We have come to a conclusion," started Carpo," that we must banish you from these lands."
Boreas was confused at first. He let the information sink in,
"What! What have I done? You can't do this to me! Persephone, please, please change their minds," begged Boreas.
Persephone didn’t say anything, but looked at him with sorrow eyes.
"We do not like the fact that you bring harm to this world. You make snow, which harms all of the mortals crops and water. You freeze the lake, kill Persephone's flowers. We just can't put up with you a second longer," boomed Horae.
Before Boreas had a chance to say anything, the world around him started to spin. He closed his eyes, trying not to get sick. When he felt it was safe to open them, he was astounded at his surroundings. There was snow everywhere! Yes Boreas was terribly sad that his friends had gone against him, but he was very happy with his new home. There was a huge ice castle, and no wicked goddesses in sight!
About a week after this happened, and right when Boreas had settled in, there was a knock at his door. Boreas went to get it, and was startled at who was at his front door!
"Persephone whatever are you doing here?"
Persephone, who was draped in the most magnificent sweaters and blankets, made herself at home. "I came to say that I am terribly sorry for our friends behavior. They wouldn’t let me decide. They took the mater into their own hands. But, anyhow, I came to give you an offer, if you accept it that is"
"Yes! Please! I do love my new home, but I am terribly homesick!"
"Yes, I thought as much. My mother is Demeter. She will help you, I know she will. She hates people being unkind. So, she will come here, and give you an offer. If you accept it, then you will be able to come back up to the surface," said Persephone.
With that final announcement, she was gone, leaving little daisies where she sat. Boreas couldn’t wait. He had heard of Demeter and how she will help people who have suffered.
Boreas waited many months, then finally, there was a booming knock at his icy door. Boreas ran to get it, and let Demeter in.
"I have been waiting for you for a very long time. I am thrilled that you are here," Boreas said, barely being able to control his excitement.
"Yes. I know. I have been watching you very closely," she said the word very like it had a million letters in it, "Okay. Now let's get down to business. I will make you an offer. Here it is: If you stay with me, for 10 of the months, I will break the barrier that holds you captive, and let you walk on Earth for 2 months. With me, you will do my chores for me. Yes, even a little old lady has chores to do. Do you accept?"
"Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes." Replied Boreas, who unfortunately wasn’t listening to the last part of what Demeter was saying.
After he agreed, Demeter broke the barrier containing him like a package of noodles, and let him wonder Earth.
This day was December 21. During these 2 months, Earth was very cold. Persephone was glad he had come up, but Horae and Carpo were very mad at Persephone. They both punished her by sending her and her mother to the underworld, to live with Hades. That worked out, because soon, Persephone fell in love with Hades.
Soon, March 21 came and Boreas had to go live with Demeter in the underworld until next year. He wasn’t allowed to see Persephone, because Demeter wanted him to suffer. Boreas wouldn’t have never said yes to her offer, if he had known that he would have to do chores for 10 months.
"Next time I am given an offer, I will listen to everything."
