Two small pitchers and one large pitcher can hold 8 cups of water. One large pitcher minus one small pitcher constitutes 2 cups of water. How many cups of water can each pitcher hold?

Answer:

Small pitcher holds 2 cups of water

Large pitcher holds 4 cups of water

Explanation:

Let the cups holded by the small pitcher be x and the cups holded by the larger pitch be y

Given Two small pitchers and one large pitcher can hold 8 cups of water

ie 2x+y=8

Also given that One large pitcher minus one small pitcher constitutes 2 cups of water

ie y-x=2

subtract those two equation's we get

3x=6

x=2.

substitute this value of x is the second equation we get

y-2=2

y=4

Therefor the number of cups of water holded by small pitcher is 2 and the number of cups of water holded by large pitcher is 4.
