If the houses are in the same pathway, the exercise says that starting from the place we are, Grandma's house is 7 miles away (we have to drive 7 miles to get there), while Aunt Millie's house is 5 miles away (we only have to drive 5 miles away to get there).
Then, if we drive 5 miles to Aunt Millies's house first, we should only have to drive two more miles to reach Grandma's house. Then, the houses are two miles separeted by two miles.
