The ratio of white beans to pinto beans in a jar is 5:2. If there are 36 more white beans than pinto beans, how many pinto beans are in the jar?

Answer: 24

Explanation:

Let the number of pinto beans be x , that is the number of white beans will be x + 36 , which means the total number of beans in the jar will be x + x + 36 = 2x + 36

Total ratio = 5 + 2 = 7

To find the number of pinto beans ,it will be

ratio of pinto beans / Total ratio X Total number of beans , that is


(2)/(7) X (2x + 36) = x

multiplying through by 7 , we have

2(2x+36) = 7x

4x + 72 = 7x

collecting the like terms , we have

72 = 7x - 4x

72 = 3x

x = 24

Therefore there are 24 pinto beans in the jar
