Let the number of sweets Mrs. Chua has be x

And the number of children be y

So,

x-8y=3 ------- 1️⃣

x-9y= -2 ------- 2️⃣

Change the signs of equation 2️⃣

x-8y=3

+x-9y=-2

- + +

__________

  • y = 5 ----- 3️⃣

Substitute equation 3️⃣ in equation 1️⃣ :

\sf \: x - 8y = 3

\sf \: x - 8 * 5 = 3

\sf \: x - 40 = 3

\sf \: x = 3 + 40

\tt \: x = 43

Therefore, The total number of children i.e. y is 5 and the total number of sweets Mrs. Chua i.e. x is 43...

  • The extra number of sweets required by Mrs. Chua is 2 because when each child gets 9 Mrs Chua has 2 sweets short...
