After the first five minutes on the graph there is a great increase in his speed. (he covered more of the race in that time up until the 7th minute)

It is true he only had one mile left - this can be shown by his graph stopping at the 4th mile on the 15th minute

there is a slow but gradual increase in his speed as he covered more of the race in the first five minutes

At the 7th minute mark he is at mile 3 - there are 4 miles to the race
