Why did only half of the school-aged children attend school during the war?

Kids probably needed to work the farm and tend to the livestock, etc. War has a nasty way of disrupting normal life.

Answer:

1) teachers evacuatied

2) children evacuated

3) children had to help with familes as father a brothers were gone

4) one moment could be peaceful and the next a bomb warning
