I've read the book and I can say that Della is kind and shes loving also she cares a lot about Jim so she's caring as well. She has extremely long and beautiful and important to Jim. She is also thoughtful of others, here's an example: Della cut her hair and sold it $20 plus she already had $1.83 cents. She used the money from her "hair cut" to buy Jim a silver chain for his grandfathers watch. Which in his case was very important to him. Answer: Direct characterization is when the author themselves say how a character acts, or what they are like. In the short story The Gift of the Magi Della is in a relationship with a man named Jim. They are poor and could not afford much. So Della went out to sell her hair, during these few scenes the author wrote some direct characterization about Della. "Della's beautiful hair fell about her rippling and shining like a cascade of brown waters. It reached below her knee and made itself almost a garment for her." The author described Della's beautiful hair in detail and we, the readers, did not have to infer anything at all. Both indirect and direct characterization are crucial in stories because they allow the reader to understand, and know more about the characters. Only difference is that direct is the author basically telling us, and indirect is through clues and inferring.
