From Geometric Mean Theorem we know that,

In a right triangle, the altitude from the right angle to the hypotenuse divides the hypotenuse into two segments.

The length of the altitude is the geometric mean of the lengths of the two segments.

So, Above theorem apply in the diagram;


(ST)/(RT)=(RT)/(TQ)

Plug RT=x , ST=9 and TQ=16 from diagram;


(9)/(x)=(x)/(16)


x^(2) =9* 16


x^(2) =144


x=12

∴ The value is 12 units
