Reasoning:

so lets make up a number to represent P: howabout ten. and p is the original amount of people in the hockey team, so lets just say that there are ten people there right now. and if five people joined, it would ADD ( + ) five people to the team. so it would be the Original 10 + 5, just replace the ten with P, and you get P + 5
