Last year in Northern Ireland we

collected 123,000 tonnes of
household waste
69,000 tonnes was sent to landfill
19.000 tonnes was composted
35,000 tonnes was recycled
There is a target for the UK to recycle
at least 50% of household waste by
2020.
Recycled materials include those that have been composted.
Is Northern Ireland within 10% of meeting the UK target for recycling?
Round decimal answers to 2 decimal places

How do I work this out?

Answer:

Explanation:

Given that:

Northern Ireland house hold waste = 123,000 tonnes

Recycled = 35,000 tonnes

As recycled materials also include composted materia so:

Composted = 19000 tonnes

As UK targets at least 50%

Let us check the percentage of recycled waste of Northern Ireland house hold waste :

%age = obtained / total * 100

%age = 35,000 + 19,000 /123,00 *100

%age = 54,000/123,000 * 100

%age = 43.902

By rounding off to 2 decimal places:

target percentage = 43. 90%

As UK's target is 50% so we can say that Northern Ireland is within 10% of meeting the UK target for recycling because:

50% - 43.90% = 6.10%

Its is within 10%

i hope it will help you!
