1. Foil the left hand side of the equation:


- 16x + 8 < 2x + 5

2. Isolate the variable (bring all of the x's on one side):


- 16x < 2x +( 5 - 8)


- 16x - 2x < - 3


- 18x < - 3

3. Isolate x by dividing both sides by -18. Remember, when you divide inequalities by a negative number, you have to switch the sign!


( - 18x)/( - 18) < - ( - 3)/( - 18)


x > (1)/(6)
