A mass of 7kg is held in equilibrium by 2

ropes. One has tension 20N and acts on 90 degrees
to the vectical. Find the tension in other
ropes and the angle itself make with vectical.

Answer:

71.52 N and 16.24 degrees.

Explanation:

Let the tension in the second rope be T N and the angle with the vertical be x degrees.

Resolving forces;

Vertically: 7g = T cos x

Horizontally: 20 = T sin x

T sin x / T cos x = tan x

So tan x = 20 / 7g

= 20 / (7 * 9.81

= 0.29124

So x = arctan 0.29124

= 16.24 degrees.

The tension T = 7g / cos 16.24

= 71.52 N.
