The length of a bridge on a map is 1.5 cm. What is the actual length of the bridge in meters if the map is drawn at a scale of 1:40,000

The actual length of the bridge is 600 meters

Explanation:

we know that

The scale on a map is


(1)/(40,000)

That means

1 unit on a map represent 40,000 units in the actual

1 cm on a map represent 40,000 cm in the actual

Remember that


1/ m=100/ cm

so


40,000\ cm=40,000/100=400\ m

we can rewrite the scale as


(1)/(400)(cm)/(m)

using proportion

Find out the actual length of the bridge in meters if the length of a bridge on a map is 1.5 cm.

Let

x ----> the the actual length of the bridge in meters


(1)/(400)(cm)/(m)=(1.5)/(x)(cm)/(m)\\\\x=400(1.5)\\\\x=600\ m
