The benefits and/or drawbacks could someone gain from reading or seeing things from the view of someone who has autism, schizophrenia, etc:

When people read about the struggles that the differently able person deals with and how they solve their problems, it gives them an outlook. It helps them understand them better and communicate with them better.

Keeping in mind that autism affects the development of a human to communicate and interact, it is a good idea to keep track of things from their perspective. When we understand their interests and if possible we can tune that interest into something productive and help them with their development.
