Answer: x= 24 degrees

y = 66 degrees

Explanation:

In order to solve for x and y as given in the diagram, we would apply the following rules

1)The sum of the angles in a triangle is 180 degrees.

2) sum of angles in a straight line is 180 degrees

Looking at the bigger triangle on the left, let the last unknown angle be z

70 degrees + 74 degrees + z degrees = 180 degrees.

z = 180 degrees - 74 degrees - 70 degrees = 36 degrees.

Looking at the straight line at the bottom, it contains angle z( 36 degrees) , angle y and 78 degrees.

Therefore

36 degrees + y degrees + 78 degrees = 180

y = (180 -36 -78) degrees

y = 66 degrees

x + y(66 degrees) + 90 degrees = 180

x = (180 -66-90) degrees

x = 24 degrees
