Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
The morning I noticed that the floor in my bedroom was sagging, I told my mother immediately. She
tilted her head and looked carefully at the floor. "I don't think so, honey," she said, patting my arm,
"but we'll keep an eye on it." Her shoulders drooped as she walked out of the room, leaving me
frustrated and helpless. I thought I saw her wipe a tear from her eye.
My mother had a long history of not facing reality. She questioned my imaginary friends when I was a
little boy. When my grandmother died last year, my mother did not believe me when I told her that
Granny had moved into my closet. Mom spent a lot of time crying. And she spent more time on the
phone than she did talking to me.
It was Friday evening when the people from the hospital arrived. The lead doctor put his hand on my
shoulder. "Franklin, we let you come home too soon. You aren't ready yet, so we'll be taking you back
to the hospital until you are fully recovered."
