About a woman who loses her friend's dimond necklace and struggles to buy a new necklace that replicates the old one and pays dearly for it. A few years later, the same woman, with all her beauty washed away, see her friend that she had replaced the necklace from. She decides to tell her what had happened only to find out a shocking peice of information. It turns out that the necklace wasn't really a diamond necklace but purely made of paste.
In the beginning, the main character Mahthilde Loisel, is discontented with her life and dreams about a life of luxury and riches. Her husband , a clerk, comes home and hands her a invitation to a party.But she refuses to go because she has nothing to wear. Her husband tells her to borrow something from her friend Madame Forestier a wealthy women.
So she goes and Madame Forestier lends her a dress and tells her to pick a peice of jewelry and when Mahtilde see the diamond necklace she tries it on and she knows it is the one. She hugs her friend and her and her husband depart for the ball.
Mahtilde has a wonderful time at the ball (which is George Ramponneau and Madame George Ramponneau wedding) and feels like she is the most beautiful woman there.
Once at home she goes to take off her clothing and looks in the mirror and lets out a cry. She realizes the is missing. The husband hurries in to see what happened and she tells him what happened.
So the husband redresses and retraces their steps to try and find. Having no luck he tells mahtilde to tell Madame Forestier that she had broken the clasp and had go get fixed while they would look for the exact replica.After days and days of searching they found it and purchased it. Mahtilde went to go give it back to her friend and rejoined her husband. Since the neckalce was a diamond one it was very expensive and the couple spent the next couple years paying it off. Finally they were dept free. One day at the park she saw her friend Madame Forestier with children holding her hand. Malthide contemplates on wether she should tell her what happened . She decides and goes up to meet her. Mahtilde had become unrecognizable and Madame Forestier claims not to knoe her . But she tells her who she is and Madame Forestier cries out in and asked what happened. Mahtilde told her And Madame Forestier shook her head and held her hand. Oh Mahtilde My necklace wasn't really dimond It was made of paste only worth at least 700 francs.
