On the blueprints for a rectangular floor, the width of the floor is 6 in. The diagonal distance across the floor is 10 in. If the width of the actual floor is 32 ft, what is the actual diagonal distance across the floor?

If Actual width is 32 but represented by 6

The ratio of representation to actual is 6/32=0.1875

If actual diagonal is unknown but represented by 10 ft

then let the unknown diagonal be x

The ratio of representation on blueprint to actual is the is the same hence


\frac {10}{x}=0.1875

Therefore,
x=\frac {10}{0.1875}

x=53.33333333 ft

The actual diagonal is approximately 53.3 ft
