You have to write the proportion between the number of cups of sugar and the brownies you need those cups for:

1(1)/(2)/ 24 = x/ 36

Getting rid of mixed fraction, we have

(3)/(2)/ 24 = x/ 36

Solving for x:

24x=36\cdot(3)/(2)\iff 24x=54 \iff x=(54)/(24)=(9)/(4)=2(1)/(4)
