D/C=5/3, so 3D=5C. 14+C=D is the second equation, so now you can solve for each.
3D=5C, 14+C=D
D=(5/3)C
14+C=(5/3)C
14=(2/3)C
C=21
21+14=D=35
So there are 21 cats and 35 dogs, or 56 total animals.
