Car P travels due East along a straight highway at a constant speed of 30 m/s. At 9:00 a.m., P passes Exit 17. At precisely the same moment, car Q passes Exit 16, traveling due West at a constant 26 m/s. Slightly later, car P and car Q pass the same point. Knowing the exits are exactly 7 km apart, how many minutes past 9:00 a.m. do the cars pass each other?

Answer:

9:02:05 am

Step-by-step explanation:

The time the cars will travel is equal assuming they started and stopped at the same time

Distance = Speed × Time

s_P=30t

s_Q=26t

Distance between them is 7 km

30t+26t=7000\\\Rightarrow 56t=7000\\\Rightarrow t=(7000)/(56)\\\Rightarrow t=125\ s

Time it takes them to meet is 125 seconds or 2 minutes and 5 seconds

So, the time will be 9:02:05 am
