Read this excerpt from "Gravity" by Judith Ortiz Cofer:
My mother decorated the rest of the place in what I
referred to as Early Puerto Rican: a religious print in every
room. I had removed my Guardian Angel from my wall, the
one depicting a winged creature in flowing robes leading a
little girl and boy over the rickety bridge. (The children
appeared to be as oblivious to their guardian as to the dark
abyss opening up beneath them.) I was taking a stand by
refusing to decorate with angels and saints, and by
disdaining everything my parents loved.
