When I began factoring, I used the AC method (from the form Ax^2+Bx+C).

First, I multiplied the A and C terms, so you would multiply the 1 and -24 to get -24.

Now you need to find factors that multiply to get -24 and see if the sum of any of the pairs gets B, the middle term, 5.

These factor pairs include: 1, -24; 2, -12; 3, -8; 4, -6; 6, -4; 8, -3; 12, -2; 24, -1.

The sums of the pairs are as follows: -23, -10, -5, -2, 2, 5, 10, 23.

Since the 8, -3 pair multiplies to get -24, and adds up to 5, your factors are (x+8)(x-3).

Just to be safe multiply it out to check your work.
