Tom will get back $8.58 of change.

Solution:

Given that

Rate at which Tom purchased a chain = $2.36 for a yard

Quantity of purchase = 0.6 yards

Amount given by Tom to cashier = $10

Need to determine change he will get back from cashier.

Cost of 1 yard of chain = $2.36

So cost of 0.6 yard of chain = 0.6
* 2.36 = 1.416

On rounding off we get 1.42

Amount tom will receive back = Amount given by tom to cashier – Cost of 0.6 yard of chain

= 10 – 1.42 = 8.58

Hence Tom will get back $8.58 of change.
