Erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone produced by the kidneys, is released into the blood when blood oxygen levels are low. EPO stimulates the production of erythrocytes by red bone marrow. If an individual spends a considerable amount of time at high altitudes where atmospheric oxygen is reduced, the levels of EPO would be __________________(normal/higher/lower) than in comparison to living at sea level.

Higher! Because at high altitudes: lower atmospheric oxygen—> secretion of EPO to compensate
