So to find the value of y that makes the equation true we have to calculate the value of y.

3y - 5y - (2y - 6) = 8y - 2(9y - 6)

First we have distribute;

3y - 5y - 2y + 6 = 8y - 18y + 12

Collect like terms next;

-4y + 6 = -10y + 12

Add 10y to both sides

6y + 6 = 12

Subtract 6 from both sides

6y = 6

Divide both sides by 6

y = 1
