The table below represents a linear function f(x) and the equation represents a function g(x):

x f(x)
−1 −5
0 −1
1 3
g(x)

g(x) = 4x + 3

Part A: Write a sentence to compare the slope of the two functions and show the steps you used to determine the slope of f(x) and g(x). (6 points)

Part B: Which function has a greater y-intercept? Justify your answer. (4 points)

Answer:

OK, so we know that every linear function can be written as y=mx+b

So substituting -5 as y and -1 as x we get -5=-m+b

Then substituting -1 as y and 0 as x we get -1=0*m+b=b

solving we get b=-1

so we substitute b=-1 in -5=-m+b and we get -5=-m-1 or -m=-4 which is m=4

so f(x)=4x-1, and the slope is the m in y=mx+b which is 4.

Part B

y intercept is when x=0

Substituting y=0 in f(x)=4x-1 and we get -1

Substituting y=0 in g(x)=4x+3 and we get 3

So y-intercept of g(x) is greater than y-intercept of f(x)

Hope this helps.
