12 flowers were planted in a row, and after that between each two flowers was planted one more flower. Then, the same pattern was repeated four more times. In total, how many flowers have been planted ?

23 flowers

Explanation:

(For a visual example)

  1. Take a slip of paper and draw 12 lines evenly spaced apart.
  2. Draw a line in between each of those flowers.
  3. Count up all those flowers!

Solution:

First we have 12 flowers, then we added 11 flowers. So, now we have 23 flowers and we add 22. We repeat it and get following:

353=12+11+22+(12+11+22−1)+88+176

Answer: 353.
