Waves refer to a transmission of a disturbance from one point known as the source to another.
Waves may be classified as either longitudinal or transverse waves and as either mechanical waves or electromagnetic waves.
Electromagnetic waves are waves that do not require a material medium for transmission while mechanical waves are those that require a material medium for transmission.
Longitudinal waves are waves in which the direction of wave motion is parallel to the vibration of particles while transverse waves are those whose direction of wave motion is perpendicular to the vibration of particles.
Additionally, longitudinal waves are characterized by rarefaction and compression while transverse waves are characterized by crests and troughs.
