4y = x + 4 → (1)

x = y + 8 → (2)

Substitute x = y + 8 into (1)

4y = y + 8 + 4 = y + 12 ( subtract y from both sides )

3y = 12 ( divide both sides by 3 ) )

y = 4

Substitute y = 4 into (2)

x = 4 + 8 = 12

Thus

x = 12 and y = 4
