The sum of two numbers is –28. Their difference is 122. Find the numbers.

Let the numbers be x and y

According to given conditions:

x + y = -28 ......... eq 1

x - y = 122 ............eq 2

Adding both equations we get:

(x + y ) + (x - y) = -28+ 122

Simplifying:

x + y +x - y = 94

Adding like terms

2x = 94

dividing both sides by 2

x = 94/2

x = 47

Putting x =47 in eq 1 we get

x + y = -28

47 + y = - 28

subtracting 47 from both sides

47 - 47 + y = -28 - 47

y = - 75

So the numbers are 47 and -75

Proof:

47 + (-75) = 47 - 75 = -28

47 - (-75)= 47 + 75 = 122
