A 16-year-old boy is skateboarding, hits a curb, and falls. To break his fall, his stretches out his right hand and lands on it. His hand is sore for a few days and doesn't seem to be getting better. He presents to the ED and is found to have pain in the snuff box region. An X-ray is ordered and shows a broken bone in the palm of the hand. What is likely fractured?

Answer:

The scaphoid is likely to be fractured

Step-by-step explanation:

This fracture occurs a lot in cases of fall, since our extinct to protect our self against the floor is to use the palm of our hands, where in theory we would have more support. Depending on the height of the fall and weight of the person a fracture of one of the small bones of the wrist can occur, and in many cases the majority is the scaphoid.

Treatment may range from using plaster to mobilizing or even surgery depending on the severity of the injury.
