Three times a number minus another number is -3. The sum of the numbers is 11. Find the numbers

The first equation is


3x-y=-3

The second equation is


x+y=11

If you sum the two equations you'll cancel y:


4x=8 \iff x=2

And since the sum must be 11, we have y=9.
