A maths class has equal numbers of boys and girls. Eight of the girls left early to play in a netball match. This left 3 times as many boys in the class as girls. How many students are in the class?

Explanation:

x = boys / y = girls / s = total number of students

x + y = s

3x + y - 8 = s

Maybe someone can improve upon this because this is all I know. Not the answer btw ^^^
