Collagen fibers are responsible for forming linking tissues, or cartilage, and are found in the bone. They posses high tensile strength of collagen fibrils, which strengthens the general skeletal system and its connections. New bone material are created chemically by cells called osteoblasts, which possess water in place of minerals in their cells .

So the collagen fibers found in the osteoids makes the overall bone matrix stronger by allowing it to resist bending and twisting.
