The taxiFair in Gotham city is $2.40 for the first half mile additional mileage Charged at the rate of $.20 for each additional .1 mile. Do you plan to give the driver $2 tip. How many miles can you ride for $10?

Answer:

3.3 miles

Explanation:

You have $10

Since you want to give $2 as tip, you actually have $10 - $2 = $8 [for mileage]

First half mile (0.5mi) is $2.40, so you will have remaining:

$8 - $2.40 = $5.6

Now,$0.20 is charged for 0.1 mile, how much can you go with $5.6?

We set up ratio and solve for the distance we can go with 5.6 (let this distance be x):

(0.2)/(0.1)=(5.6)/(x)\\0.2x=0.1*5.6\\0.2x=0.56\\x=2.8

That is 2.8 miles with this

Remember, you have already taken into account 0.5 miles at the beginning, so total miles would be:

0.5 + 2.8 = 3.3 miles

With the tipping conditions and $10 budget, you can ride 3.3 miles
