If the distance increases and force decreases, it only takes us a second, using our awesome intelligence, to conclude that something is farther away, and it has less force acting on it.

When the distance increases, the force of gravity decreases. Isaac Newton's law of universal gravitation states that every particle attracts every other particle. Basically, every two objects are attracted to each other because of gravitational forces. So the further the distance, the lower the gravitational force.
