Primary succession is the growth in that area which was previously uninhabited, unoccupied and with no vegetation before while Secondary succession is the growth in that area which was previously occupied and vegetated and disturbed by some environmental factors.

The example of secondary succession is damage to the area in form of flood, earthquake, deforestation or can be human made which give rise to new growth and occupation and this process is secondary succession.
