Jim’s average speed is 8 km/h while walking and 12 km/h while jogging. It takes him 0.5 h longer to walk from the school to the pool than it takes him to jog the same distance. How far is it from the school to the pool?

Answer:

12 km

Explanation:

Using the formula rate × time = distance:

Jogging = 12 km/h × x = 12x

Walking = 8 km/h × (x + 0.5) = 8x + 4

Setting the two terms equal:

12x = 8x + 4

Subtracting 8x from both sides:

4x = 4

Dividing both sides by 4:

x = 1

Therefore, it takes 1 hour of jogging or 1.5 hours of walking to travel from the school to the pool. Thus, they are 12 km [12 km/h × 1 h or 8 km/h × 1.5 h] apart.
