Kayla's school is selling tickets to a play. On the first day of ticket sales, the school sold 5 senior citizen tickets and 3 child tickets for a total of $69. The school took in $73 on the second day by selling 1 senior citizen ticket and 8 child tickets. Find the price of a senior citizen ticket and the price of a child ticket

Explanation:

Let price of senior ticket be "s", and

price of child ticket be "c"

5 senior ticket and 3 child ticket cost 69, so we can write:


5s+3c=69

Also, 1 senior and 8 child tickets cost 73, thus we can write:


s+8c=73

Or


s=73-8c

We can put this into 1st equation and get an equation in terms of "c" and solve for c first:


5s+3c=69\\5(73-8c)+3c=69\\365-40c+3c=69\\296=37c\\c=8

Thus, c = 8

Now,

s = 73 - 8c

s = 73 - 8(8)

s = 73 - 64

s = 9
