The key points of the Enlightenment included the use of logic and reason to determine truth in all areas and the ability of individuals to learn independently. The Enlightenment upheld ideals such as equality, which directly influenced the American, French, and Haitian Revolution, as evidenced in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen.
The American Revolution inspired both the French Revolution and the Haitian Revolution through ideas expressed in the Declaration and Constitution. Such ideas included equality, freedom of speech and press, and freedom from tyranny.
The French Revolution upheld many ideas of the Enlightenment, especially in the beginning. Some of these ideas included the idea of equality, fair trials, and freedom from unjust punishments. Later in the Revolution, the Reign of Terror undermined the ideas of the Enlightenment, going against religious toleration, freedom of speech, and fair trials as well.
