Photosynthesis requires water, carbon dioxide gas and light. Water is absorbed by the roots and conducted through the xylem to the leaves. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the atmosphere through the stomata across the inter cellular spaces to the photosynthetic cells. The reaction involves the light and dark stage.

In the light reactions, chlorophyll in the grana traps light. Some of the light is used in the photochemical splitting of water into hydrogen ions and oxygen. This is called photolysis. The rest of the light is used to drive the formation of ATP from ADP and phosphate.

In the dark reaction, which occur in the stroma of chloroplasts, carbon dioxide reacts with with hydrogen ions to form glucose. Energy for this reaction is provided by ATP formed during the light stage.
