The weight of an object is calculated using the formula W=mg,

where: W is the weight, in newtons (N) m is the mass, in kg g is the acceleration due to gravity, in m/s2
On Earth g= 10 m/s2 , and on the Moon g= 2 m/s2 .
The mass of a man is 75 kg and the mass of a lunar landing module is 10 344 kg.
(a) Work out the weight of the: (i) man on Earth( ii) lunar landing module on Earth.
(b) Work out the weight of the:( i) man on the Moon (ii )lunar landing module on the Moon

Final answer:

To calculate the weight of an object, the formula W=mg is used. The weight of the man on Earth is 750 N and the lunar landing module is 103,440 N. On the Moon, their weights are approximately 121.875 N and 16,809.25 N respectively since the gravitational acceleration is much lower there.

Step-by-step explanation:

The weight of an object is the gravitational force exerted on it and is calculated using the formula W=mg, where W is weight, m is mass, and g is the acceleration due to gravity. On Earth, g is approximately 10 m/s2, whereas on the Moon, g is approximately 1.625 m/s2.

Calculation of Weight on Earth and Moon

(a) The weight of the man and the lunar landing module on Earth:

Lunar landing module: W=mg = (10,344 kg)(10 m/s2) = 103,440 N

Man: W=mg = (75 kg)(1.625 m/s2) = 121.875 N (approximately)

Lunar landing module: W=mg = (10,344 kg)(1.625 m/s2) = 16,809.25 N (approximately)

Note that the mass of an object remains constant regardless of location, but its weight changes due to variations in g. Therefore, weight depends on both the mass of the object and the strength of gravity at a given location.
