In the beginning, the Pope promised that all sins would be forgiven if you die in battle for the holy war. This was well received at the start but after some setbacks, the church had to promise more. So they didn't only promise spiritual gain from battle but also economic and legal. They promised to forgive debt and interests, protect property and family and even special courts of justice for the crusaders who commit criminal acts.
