Explanation:

Let's say f is the first place prize, and s is the second prize.

Amaal: 4f + 2s = 1920

Brian: f + 3s = 1080

Now we can isolate and substitute.

f = 1080 - 3s

4(1080 - 3s) + 2s = 1920

4320 - 12s + 2s = 1920

10s = 4320 - 1920

10s = 2400

s = 240

f = 1080 - 3*240

= 1080 - 720

= 360
