Why was the Cold War an important turning point in world history?

The end of the Cold War should be considered a turning point in history, as it was the end of a period of 44 years of NATO and the USSR holding each other at nuclear gunpoint, so to speak, and brought the world into a new era of relative peace, (until the terrorists came along and ruined it all for everyone).
