That reason may be in the past, in which case we speak of causal determinism; but it could also be in the future, in which case we speak of teleological determinism.

Causal determinism assumes that the state of the present is caused by previous events according to the causal laws that regulate and govern the world. This variant of determinism is related to the theory of men's self-authorship, which establishes that every person makes himself, generating the present of him through the behaviors carried out in the past.
