Bacteria are organisms that belong to kingdom Monera. They also comprise of blue green bacteria. They have the following characteristics:

  • They are all unicellular organisms that occur singularly or in colonies.
  • They lack other cell organelles such as mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum.
  • They are bound by a cell wall containing mucoproteins and sugars rather than cellulose
  • Some are autotrophs and heterotrophs.
  • Reproduction is mostly asexual through binary fission
  • Some are aerobic and others anaerobic.
